INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES

Here are some quotes that we have discussed in our weekly sessions. Many are from the Dhammapada, a book composed of a collection of various quotes from Siddhartha Gautama, the first Buddha. They teach us Dharma and show us the path to freedom from suffering in our daily life.

The full Dhammapada collection can be found here.

To understand everything is to forgive everything.

On life's journey faith is nourishment, virtuous deeds are a shelter, wisdom is the light by day and right mindfulness is the protection by night.  If a man lives a pure life, nothing can destroy him.

"All that we are is the result of what we have thought; it is made up of our thoughts. If a man speaks or acts with an evil thought, pain follows him, as the wheel follows the foot of the ox that draws the carriage." Chapter 1 Verse 1.

We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think.  When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.

"The world does not know everything must all come to an end here;- but those who know it, their quarrels cease at once." Chapter 1 Verse 6.

"If with kindly generosity, one merely has the wish to sooth the aching heads of other beings, such merit knows no bounds."  Shantideva

"His thought is quiet, quiet are his words and deeds.  When he has obtained freedom by true knowledge, he thus has become a quiet man."  Buddha

"As rain does not break through a well-thatched house, passion for lust will not break through a well reflecting mind" Chapter 1 Verse 13

"The virtuous man delights in this world, and he delights in the next; he delights in both. He delights and rejoices, when he sees the purity of his own work." Chapter 1 Verse 16

As a fletcher makes straight his arrow, a wise man makes straight his trembling and unsteady thought, which is difficult to guard, difficult to hold back."  Chapter 3 Verse 33

"Not a mother, not a father will so much, nor any other relative; a well directed mind will do us greater service."  Chapter 3 Verse 43

"Like a beautiful flower, full of colour, but without scent, are the fine but fruitless words of him who does not act accordingly."  Chapter 4 Verse 51

"If a traveler does not meet with one who is better, or his equal, let him firmly keep to his solitary journey; there is no companionship with a fool." Chapter 5 Verse 61

"Fools of little understanding have themselves for their greatest enemies, for they do evil deeds which must bear bitter fruits." Chapter 5 Verse 66

"Do not have evil-doers for friends, do not have low people for friends: have virtuous people for friends, have for friends the best of men" Chapter 6 Verse 7
